Konark Dance festival, celebrated in Orrisa, takes place in the month of December. This dance festival of India sees a host of celebrated dancers from all across the country performing in the open-air auditorium at the Sun Temple in Konark.
The Sun Temple of Konark is also known as the 'Black Pagoda,' owing to the black granite used in the construction of this 700-year old temple. The temple is designed in the form of a chariot of the Sun God, drawn by seven horses. The most attractive part of the temple is the 'Natyamandir' or the dancing hall, which is splashed all over with sculptures of various Odissi poses.
The Konark Dance Festival is a melting point for various forms of dances. During this festival, one gets to see dances like Odissi, Bharathnatyam, Manipuri, Kathak…a wide mixture of cultures blending into each other. This dance festival is also witness to Crafts Mela and Food Mela, where people can savour various delicacies while going through the ethnic craftsmanship of artists who are there to display their wares.
